A Climb for the Women of Afghanistan

About Zakia (River)

Zakia Mehtar Ebrahimi is now on her way to becoming the first woman of Afghanistan to climb Mount Everest — and she is dedicating every step of this extraordinary journey to the women of Afghanistan, especially Hazara Afghan women, who continue to face some of the harshest restrictions and injustices in the world.

Baba Mazari Foundation - Australia is honoured to support her historic and deeply symbolic mission.

Who I Am & Why I’m Climbing Everest

My identity

I am a Hazara woman, and I carry with me the stories, struggles, and hopes of women who have been silenced.

My purpose

This climb is not about conquering a mountain. It’s about standing for women who are denied the right to learn

My message

When I climb, I climb for every girl studying in secret, every woman whose dreams were interrupted.

The Crisis Facing Women in Afghanistan

Education ban

Women and girls have been removed from schools and universities. Their futures have been locked away.

Underground schools

Despite the risks, underground schools continue. Women teach in hidden rooms. Girls learn in silence. Their courage is extraordinary.

Why this matters globally

When women are denied education anywhere, it affects all of us. This is a human rights issue, not a regional one.

What the Campaign Will Achieve

The goal

We are raising $200,000 to support 1,000 women with scholarships to pursue their education through open universities and underground education.

Scholarships

Each scholarship helps a woman access online learning, vocational training, or remote study.

Supporting underground schools

Funds will help keep secret classrooms running — safe spaces where girls can continue learning.

Impact

Every $200 changes the life of one woman for an entire year.

Why I Chose Everest

Symbolism

Everest represents the impossible. And right now, education for women in Afghanistan feels impossible — but we refuse to give up

Visibility

The world pays attention to Everest. I want that attention to shine on the women who have been forgotten

.

Courage

If they can risk everything to learn in secret, I can risk the cold, the altitude, and the climb to stand with them.

What I Want the World to Understand

Women’s resilience

These women are not victims. They are powerful, determined, and hungry for knowledge.

Collective responsibility

We cannot change policies overnight, but we can change lives today.

Hope

Education is hope. And hope is something no one can take away

You can sponsor a woman’s education for a year. It’s one of the most meaningful gifts you can give.

Final statement

When I stand on the summit of Everest, I won’t be standing alone.

I will be standing with 1,000 women whose futures you helped unlock.

This climb is for them — and with your support, they will rise
